Screen Recorder
Record your screen from the browser.

What is Screen Recorder?
Screen Recorder is a free online screen recorder that captures your screen, a window, or a browser tab with no install and no watermark. Click start, choose what to share (with optional audio), and stop to download a WebM video — recorded entirely in your browser.
Key features
- Capture the full screen, one window, or a tab
- Optional audio recording along with the video
- Downloads as a WebM video file
- No watermark on recordings
- Stopping from the browser's share bar also saves
How to record your screen
This records your screen, a single window, or one browser tab and hands you a video file — no extension, no account, no watermark, and no upload. It's built on the browser's own screen-capture API, so the recording is captured and encoded on your device and saved straight to it.
Steps
- Start recording. The browser's native picker asks what to share — your entire screen, a specific application window, or a single tab — and whether to include audio. Choose one and recording begins.
- Do whatever you want to capture.
- Stop & download. A WebM video file (
recording.webm) is saved to your device. Ending the share from the browser's built-in "Stop sharing" bar also stops and saves — you don't have to return to this tab.
The audio gotcha most people hit
The audio option captures the audio of the thing you're sharing — a tab's sound, or system audio — not your microphone. The screen-capture API doesn't record your mic, so if you're trying to narrate a walkthrough with your voice, this won't pick it up. Two more wrinkles:
- In Chrome, the "Share tab audio" checkbox reliably captures sound when you share a tab. Capturing full-screen system audio is patchier and, on macOS especially, often isn't available at all.
- If your recording came out silent, you almost certainly shared a window or whole screen without tab audio, or the source simply had no sound.
Why WebM, and how to get MP4
The file is WebM (VP8/VP9), the format browsers encode natively. Most modern players — Chrome itself, VLC, Discord — play WebM fine. If you specifically need MP4 (for some editors, older players, or certain upload forms), run the WebM through the Video Converter tool afterward. There's no watermark and no length limit imposed by the tool.
Browser and device requirements
Screen recording needs the getDisplayMedia API, which means a recent desktop browser — Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. Mobile browsers, including iOS Safari, don't support it, so use a computer. On the first recording the browser asks for permission to capture your screen; you have to grant it for anything to be captured.
A note on long recordings
Because the video is assembled in memory on your device and only written out when you stop, a very long recording uses a lot of RAM. That's the trade-off for keeping everything local and private — nothing you record is uploaded, by this site or anyone else. For a marathon session, record in shorter segments rather than one multi-hour take.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I record my voice or microphone over the screen?
- No — the browser's screen-capture API records the audio of what you're sharing (a tab or system audio), not your microphone. To narrate with your voice you'd need separate recording; this tool captures the screen and shared audio only.
- My recording has no sound — what went wrong?
- You most likely shared a full screen or window without audio, or shared a tab without ticking "Share tab audio." In Chrome, tab audio is the most reliable option; capturing system audio for a full-screen share is patchy and often unavailable on macOS.
- What format is the video, and can I get an MP4?
- It saves as WebM (recording.webm), which Chrome, VLC, and Discord play natively. If you need MP4 for an editor or an upload form, convert the WebM with the Video Converter tool afterward.
- Does it work on my phone?
- No — it needs the desktop getDisplayMedia API. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on a computer work; iOS Safari and mobile browsers don't support screen capture, so use a desktop.
- Is there a time limit or watermark?
- Neither — recordings are unwatermarked and there's no imposed length cap. Just note the video is held in your device's memory until you stop, so extremely long recordings use a lot of RAM; record in segments for very long sessions.
Privacy
The recording is captured and encoded locally using your browser's native screen-capture API; nothing you record is uploaded anywhere, by Spellkit or anyone else.
