URL Shortener

Turn long links into short, clean URLs — with auto OG preview cards.

What is URL Shortener?

URL Shortener turns a long link into a short, clean URL you can share anywhere. It's a free link shortener with no signup — paste your URL, optionally pick a custom slug, and add an Open Graph preview title and description so the link shows a branded card on social media.

Key features

  • Custom slugs, 3–32 letters or numbers (e.g. /r/my-launch)
  • Optional Open Graph preview title and description
  • Auto-generated preview card image for social sharing
  • Adds https:// automatically if you omit it
  • One-click copy of the finished short link

How to shorten a URL (with a custom preview card)

Long links break in awkward ways: they wrap across lines in chat, get truncated in printed material, look untrustworthy in a bio, and are impossible to read aloud. Spellkit's URL Shortener collapses one into a short, clean redirect — and, unlike a bare shortener, it can attach a custom Open Graph (OG) preview card so the link renders as a branded card instead of a naked URL when someone shares it. No signup, no account.

Steps

  1. Paste your long URL. Type or paste the link into the Long URL field. You can omit https:// — it's added automatically, so example.com/page works fine.
  2. (Optional) Add a custom preview and slug. Click Custom preview card & slug to expand the advanced options:
    • Preview title and Preview description are the text shown on the social card.
    • Custom slug sets the ending of the short link — for example /r/my-launch instead of a random string. Slugs must be 3–32 letters or numbers and are first-come, first-served; if one's taken you'll be told to pick another.
  3. Shorten. Press Shorten. Your short link appears — click the copy button to grab it.

How the preview card works

When you fill in a title or description, sharing the short link on Twitter/X, Slack, KakaoTalk, Discord, and similar platforms shows a branded preview card with a generated image, built from the text you entered. Skip the preview fields and the link is just a fast, plain redirect with no card. This is useful when the destination page has weak or missing OG tags of its own — you control how it looks without touching the target site.

Checking your clicks

After shortening, you're given a manage key and a link to a stats page that shows this link's total click count. The key is the only way to see those stats, so save it and keep it private — there's no account to log back into. Bookmark the stats link or store the key somewhere you'll find it later.

Important limits and cautions

  • Links expire after 30 days. These short URLs aren't permanent — use them for launches, campaigns, and time-bound sharing, not as a forever link for print or packaging.
  • This is the one Spellkit tool that stores data on a server. It has to: the original and short URL are saved so the redirect can work. That's the only thing sent — no account or personal profile is created. Because the destination is stored and openly redirects, never put secrets, tokens, or private URLs into a link you shorten here.
  • A short link can't be edited after creation. The destination and slug are fixed once you shorten; if you need to point somewhere else, generate a new link. And a preview card only appears on platforms that actually fetch OG tags — plain SMS or a bare paste into some apps will just show the short URL text with no card.

Frequently asked questions

How long do the short links last?
They expire 30 days after creation, so they are built for launches, campaigns, and time-bound sharing rather than permanent links for print or packaging. There is no way to extend one; you would generate a fresh link instead.
What are the rules for a custom slug?
A slug must be 3 to 32 letters or numbers, and it is first-come, first-served, so if one is taken you will be prompted to pick another. It becomes the ending of the link, for example /r/my-launch.
How do I see how many clicks my link got?
When you shorten a link you receive a manage key plus a link to a stats page showing the total click count. That key is the only way to view the stats, since there is no account, so save it and keep it private.
How does the preview card work when I share the link?
If you fill in a preview title and description, sharing on Twitter/X, Slack, KakaoTalk, or Discord shows a branded card with a generated image built from that text. Leave those fields empty and the link is just a plain, fast redirect. Platforms that do not fetch Open Graph tags, such as plain SMS, show only the URL text.
Do I have to type https:// in front of my URL?
No. If you omit the scheme it is added automatically, so example.com/page becomes https://example.com/page. If the text is not a valid URL, you get an 'enter a valid URL' error rather than a broken link.
Is this safe for private or sensitive URLs?
No. Unlike Spellkit's other tools, this one stores the original and short URL on a server so the redirect can work, and the resulting link openly redirects anyone who has it. Never shorten URLs that contain secrets, tokens, or private access links.

Privacy

The original and shortened URL are stored on our server so the link can redirect — that's the only data this tool sends anywhere; no account or personal profile is created.
