What is App Icon Generator?
App Icon Generator is a free tool that turns one square image into a complete app icon set for iOS, Android, and the web, right in your browser. Upload a high-resolution source and download a ZIP of PNGs at every common size, from 16 px favicons up to the 1024 px store icon.
Key features
- 13 sizes from 16×16 up to 1024×1024 px
- Covers web favicons plus iOS and Android sizes
- Consistent file names like icon-512x512.png
- Everything bundled into a single ZIP download
- Icons are scaled, not cropped, preserving your padding
How to generate an app icon set
Shipping an app means producing the same logo at a dozen different pixel sizes: a 16px favicon in a browser tab, a 180px icon on an iPhone home screen, a 512px icon for a Progressive Web App, a 1024px icon for the App Store listing. Exporting each one by hand from a design file is tedious and easy to get wrong. This tool takes one source image and renders all 13 sizes at once, bundling them into a single ZIP — entirely in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
The sizes you get
The generator outputs PNGs at 16, 32, 48, 64, 76, 120, 152, 167, 180, 192, 256, 512, and 1024 px, each named icon-<size>x<size>.png (for example icon-192x192.png). That covers three platforms at once:
- Web favicons — 16, 32, and 48 px are the classic browser-tab sizes.
- iOS — 120 px (iPhone app), 152 and 167 px (iPad), 180 px (home-screen touch icon), and 1024 px (the App Store marketing icon).
- Android / PWA — 192 and 512 px are the two sizes a web app manifest expects.
How to use it
- Choose a square image. Upload the highest-resolution version you have — 1024×1024 px or larger is ideal, so even the biggest output size is a downscale rather than an upscale.
- Generate the icon set. On desktop you get one ZIP; on mobile the icons save individually. Each is a downscale of your original with high-quality smoothing applied, so edges stay clean.
Why square matters
Every size is drawn into a square canvas of that exact dimension. If your source is already square, that's a clean proportional resize. If it isn't — say a 1000×700 rectangle — the image is stretched to fit the square, which distorts it. Crop or pad your artwork to a 1:1 ratio before uploading. The tool deliberately scales rather than crops, so whatever padding you build into the source is preserved at every size; if you want breathing room around a logo, add that margin yourself in the source file.
Practical tips
- Design at the smallest size first. A logo that looks sharp at 1024 px can turn into mush at 16 px. Fine lines and small text disappear when the icon is a few pixels wide, so simplify the mark until it reads clearly in the browser tab.
- Use a format that downscales well. A vector logo exported to a large PNG, or a high-res PNG, gives the crispest results. A small or already-compressed JPG will look soft once resized.
- Transparency is preserved. The output is PNG, so a transparent background stays transparent — useful for adaptive icons and favicons, but check that your mark still reads against both light and dark browser themes.
What it does not do
This is a resizer, not an icon designer. It won't round the corners, add the iOS "squircle" mask, or generate a favicon.ico container or a web manifest file — you get raw square PNGs. Everything runs on your device using the browser's canvas, so there's no upload, no server-side size cap, and the source image is discarded when you leave the page.
Frequently asked questions
- What sizes does the app icon generator produce?
- It outputs 13 PNGs at 16, 32, 48, 64, 76, 120, 152, 167, 180, 192, 256, 512, and 1024 px, each named icon-<size>x<size>.png. Those cover web favicons (16/32/48), iOS (including the 1024px App Store icon), and Android/PWA (192 and 512). On desktop they arrive as one ZIP; on mobile each icon saves individually.
- Does my source image have to be square?
- Yes. Every size is drawn into a square canvas, so a non-square source like 1000x700 gets stretched to fit and comes out distorted. Crop or pad your artwork to a 1:1 ratio, ideally 1024x1024 px or larger, before uploading.
- Are the icons cropped or scaled down to each size?
- Scaled, not cropped. The whole image is resized to each dimension with high-quality smoothing, so any padding you built into the source is preserved. If you want breathing room around a logo, add that margin yourself in the source file.
- Does it also create a favicon.ico or a web manifest file?
- No. You get raw square PNGs only, with no .ico container, no site.webmanifest, and no rounded-corner or iOS squircle masking. Add those separately if your project needs them.
- Is my image uploaded anywhere?
- No. All resizing runs on your device using the browser's canvas, so there is no upload and no server-side size limit, and the source image is discarded when you leave the page.
Privacy
Resizing your source image into every icon size happens locally in your browser; the image you upload is never sent to a server.
