How to convert an image format (PNG / JPG / WebP)
PNG, JPG, and WebP each solve a different problem, and picking the wrong one costs you either quality or bytes. This tool re-encodes an image between all three using your browser's own image codecs — the source never leaves your device — and shows the converted file size right next to the original so you can see the trade-off you're making.
The three formats, and when to reach for each
- PNG — lossless and supports transparency. Best for logos, screenshots, icons, and anything with sharp edges, flat color, or an alpha channel. Files are larger because nothing is thrown away.
- JPG — lossy, no transparency. Best for photographs, where its compression is nearly invisible and files are a fraction of a PNG's size. Transparent areas are filled with white on export.
- WebP — a modern format that usually beats both: it does lossy compression like JPG but smaller, and keeps transparency like PNG. Ideal for web images where every kilobyte counts.
How to use it

Getting the size/quality trade-off right
Quality is where most of the file-size savings live. Dragging a JPG or WebP from 100% down to around 80% typically cuts the file dramatically while staying visually indistinguishable on a photo — the last 20% of "quality" is mostly bytes spent on detail your eye won't notice. Below roughly 60% you start to see blocky artifacts around edges and in flat gradients (skies, skin). The live size readout lets you find that sweet spot by eye instead of guessing.
Common mistakes and gotchas
- PNG → JPG erases transparency. A transparent PNG converted to JPG comes out with a white rectangle where the transparency was, because JPG has no alpha channel. If you need transparency, convert to WebP or keep it PNG.
- JPG → PNG doesn't restore quality. PNG is lossless, but it can only losslessly store what's already there. Detail a JPG discarded is gone for good — and the resulting PNG of a photo is usually larger than the JPG it came from, since PNG isn't built for photographic data.
- Re-saving a JPG loses a little each time. Every JPG (or lossy WebP) save re-compresses. Convert from your highest-quality original, not from a copy that's already been through the mill.
- WebP support is broad but not universal. Every current browser reads it, but a few older desktop apps and email clients still don't. Use JPG or PNG when you need maximum compatibility.
Where it fits
This tool changes the format, not the pixel dimensions or a target file size. To make an image a specific width or height, resize it first; to hit a hard limit like "under 500 KB," a compressor that targets a byte budget is the better fit. Everything here is done by the browser's built-in encoders, locally, and the image is discarded after you download.
