How to compress an image to under 100KB
Plenty of forms cap the images they accept at exactly 100 KB — government portals, visa and exam applications, older job boards, some school and banking uploaders. A photo straight from a phone is usually 2–6 MB, so it gets rejected, and guessing quality settings by hand is tedious. How it hits the target
The tool doesn't just drop to a fixed low quality. It searches JPEG quality levels to find the highest quality that still lands under 100 KB, so you keep as much sharpness as the budget allows — a small logo might stay at high quality, while a detailed photo drops further. The target is a hard 102,400 bytes (100 × 1024), so the output reliably passes uploaders that check the byte count precisely.
Because the output is JPEG, any transparency is flattened onto a white background first. That's the right call for photos, but if you're compressing a logo or screenshot that relied on transparency, expect a white fill behind it.
When 100 KB isn't enough room
A very large or highly detailed image can be genuinely hard to fit under 100 KB. If even the lowest quality setting still overshoots, the tool falls back to that lowest-quality JPEG — which may end up slightly over the limit. If that happens, shrink the pixel dimensions first with the Image Resize tool (a 4000-px-wide photo has far more data than a 1200-px one), then compress. Fewer pixels give the compressor an easier target and a cleaner-looking result at 100 KB.
Why JPEG, and a note on re-compressing
The output is always JPEG because that's what makes hitting a small byte budget practical — JPEG's quality dial trades detail for size in fine steps, which is exactly what the search needs. PNG, being lossless, often can't get a photo under 100 KB at all. The flip side: JPEG is lossy, so compressing an image that's already a heavily-compressed JPEG stacks artifacts on artifacts. Whenever you can, start from the original file (straight from the camera or the source), not a copy that's been saved and re-saved.
Text-heavy screenshots and line art are the awkward case here — JPEG smears the sharp edges of text into a soft halo. For those, resizing down or converting to PNG usually serves better than squeezing to a 100 KB JPEG, unless the form specifically demands a JPG under 100 KB.
