JPG to PNG

This is a deliberately single-purpose tool: pick a JPG and download it as a PNG in one click, with no format menu or quality slider to fuss over. The conversion runs through your browser's native image decoder — your file is never uploaded, and it's discarded after you download. The PNG is saved with the same base filename, so photo.jpg becomes photo.png.

Why convert JPG to PNG at all

PNG buys you two things JPG can't offer. First, it's lossless: once you have a PNG, editing and re-saving it won't degrade the image the way repeatedly saving a JPG does, so it's a better working format for a picture you'll keep touching up. Second, PNG supports transparency, which many tools and platforms require — an image you'll later cut a background out of, place over a colored layout, or use as a sticker or logo generally needs to be a PNG. Some upload forms and design apps also simply reject JPG and ask for PNG.

There are practical triggers too. Slack and Discord emoji, many CMS and marketplace uploaders, and some print services accept only PNG. And if a JPG is about to go through several rounds of edits — crop, annotate, re-crop — converting to PNG once, up front, means those intermediate saves don't stack up new compression artifacts each time.

What conversion can and can't do

It's worth being clear about the limits, because "JPG to PNG" is often expected to do more than it can:

• It won't recover lost quality. JPG is a lossy format — it throws away detail to save space, and that detail is already gone. Converting to PNG faithfully preserves the JPG as it is now, blocky compression artifacts and all; it does not sharpen, de-noise, or restore anything.
• A JPG has no transparency to keep. JPG can't store an alpha channel, so your source is fully opaque. The PNG is capable of transparency, but converting doesn't magically make the background disappear — to knock out a background you need a background remover.
• The PNG is usually a bigger file. PNG uses lossless compression that suits flat graphics, not photos. Convert a photographic JPG and the PNG can easily be several times larger, since it stores every pixel exactly. That's the cost of losslessness.
